The journey of Wallei Upcycling Industries began with something most people ignore: scrap.
Founded by Soundar V↗, Wallei Upcycling Industries is working to transform discarded materials into purposeful products - from furniture made using oil drums and automotive scrap to bags created from discarded denim and candles made from bottles.
The mission is simple:
Turn trash into treasure.
But behind that simple idea lies a much bigger vision: to reduce landfill waste, create sustainable products, generate green jobs, and take products made in Tamil Nadu to customers around the world.
From Corporate Life to Entrepreneurship
Before starting Wallei, Soundar spent around 12 years working in the corporate world.
But even during his professional career, he was drawn towards something different.
From a young age, he enjoyed experimenting with scrap materials and finding ways to create something useful from them.
During weekends, he worked on small projects, transforming discarded materials into something new.
That interest stayed with him. Then came a moment of reflection. He began experimenting with prototypes.
Eventually, he made the decision to leave his corporate career and work full-time on building Wallei Upcycling Industries.
The Problem: Scrap Doesn't Always Get a Second Life
Scrap is often seen as the end of a product's journey. But Wallei sees it differently.
According to Soundar, the growing volume of automotive and industrial scrap creates a significant environmental challenge.
In Tamil Nadu alone, approximately 10 lakh Approximate tonnes of automotive scrap are generated every year. When such waste is accumulated in one place, the scale can be enormous.
While a significant portion of this material can be recycled, not all scrap gets a second life. According to Soundar, around 80% may be recycled, while the remaining portion can end up in landfills. And that creates another problem.
When waste reaches landfills, it can contribute to land pollution and other environmental challenges.
Tyres are another major concern. Large quantities of discarded tyres are also burned every year. According to the estimates shared by Soundar, around 0.2 lakh Approximate tonnes of tyres are burned annually, contributing to harmful emissions.
The environmental impact can be significant. Soundar points to estimates equivalent to millions of tonnes of CO2 emissions entering the atmosphere. These emissions contribute to air pollution and ultimately, this is the air people breathe.
The problem with scrap does not begin when a product is discarded. The problem begins when we fail to find a better purpose for it.
This is where Wallei sees an opportunity. Instead of simply allowing discarded materials to end up in landfills or contribute to pollution, Wallei works to give them a second life.
The company aims to:
Source discarded materials
Reimagine their potential
Add value through design and craftsmanship
Convert scrap into purposeful products
Help divert materials away from landfills
Reduce the environmental impact associated with waste
The goal is not just recycling.
It is upcycling.
Three Markets, One Bigger Vision
Wallei is building for multiple customer segments.
Corporates
Companies are increasingly looking for sustainable products and greener procurement options.
Wallei offers products that can potentially serve as:
Office furniture
Sustainable corporate gifts
Custom-branded products
Green procurement alternatives
The company also focuses on helping customers understand the environmental impact of choosing upcycled products.
Environmental Impact Mentioned by Wallei

Global Markets
The bigger ambition goes beyond India. Wallei sees potential for upcycled products in international markets, particularly in regions where demand for sustainable products is growing. The team aims to take products built from locally available scrap and create value in global markets.
Cafes and Restaurants
Wallei also sees an opportunity in hospitality spaces. Upcycled furniture can create visually distinctive environments for cafés and restaurants. A product made from an oil drum or another discarded material can become more than just furniture. It can become part of the experience - a place where people sit, take photos, and share the space online.
Building a Startup from a Tier-2 City
Building a startup outside a major metropolitan ecosystem comes with its own challenges.
But Soundar also sees growing opportunities.
Wallei has received incubation and ecosystem support through organisations including StartupTN↗, AIC Raise↗ and Aakam 360↗

For a first-generation entrepreneur entering a new ecosystem, incubation support can make a significant difference.
The support includes exposure to:
Startup schemes
Funding opportunities
Expert sessions
Mentorship
Networking
Events
Business guidance
Incubation centres and startup ecosystems can help bridge that gap.
From Scrap to a Growing Range of Products
Wallei's product range continues to expand across different categories, with a common idea connecting them all: upcycling discarded materials into products with a new purpose.
They create functional infrastructure and furniture products using materials that would otherwise be discarded.
These include:
Upcycled furniture
Tables and seating
Oil drum furniture
Tyre-based products
Public-space infrastructure
Decorative installations

These products demonstrate how scrap materials can be transformed into durable and visually distinctive spaces for offices, cafes, restaurants, public areas and other environments.
From Upcycled Products to Upcycled Public Spaces
Wallei's vision for upcycling goes beyond individual products.
The team has also taken up the development of a public park in Thiruchengodu, created using the principles of upcycling and sustainable design.
The project represents an important milestone for Wallei: Thiruchengodu's public park↗ is being developed as Tamil Nadu's first upcycled park.

Supporting Corporate Sustainability Through Upcycling
Wallei's role in sustainability extends beyond selling upcycled products.
Wallei's work aligns with broader sustainability frameworks such as Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG)↗, Business Responsibility and Sustainability Report (BRSR)↗ and Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)↗.
As a green vendor, Wallei supports organisations in exploring sustainable alternatives for their procurement and workplace requirements.
Wallei also works with companies to reduce their environmental impact. By using upcycled products instead of new materials, businesses can reduce waste and help lower their Scope 3 emissions, which come from the products and services they purchase.

For Wallei, every upcycled product can therefore represent more than a purchase. It can be a small, measurable step toward building a more sustainable supply chain.
Sustainability should not stop at a company's report. It should become part of what the company buys, builds and uses.
The Vision for 2030
WALLEI has set ambitious goals for the years ahead.
The company aims to:
Export to more than 20 countries
Divert thousands of tonnes of scrap from landfills
Convert more discarded materials into useful products
Create around 100 green jobs in Salem
Build greater awareness around upcycling
Encourage more entrepreneurs to enter the sustainable products space
There is another important part of the vision. Wallei does not want to be the only company doing this.
The larger goal is to create awareness and encourage more businesses and entrepreneurs to explore ways to divert waste away from landfills and transform it into something useful.
Sometimes, it begins with something the world has already thrown away.
If you are a corporate, cafe, restaurant, institution or organisation looking to explore sustainable and upcycled solutions, Wallei would love to work with you.
